Things are going well for CD Projekt Red, and Cyberpunk 2077 continues to shoulder the studio’s financial burden. The Polish gaming giant has officially confirmed that the role-playing game, released in 2020, is now the company’s main source of revenue. After a rough start, the game has achieved great success, reaching 35 million sales. Remarkably, Cyberpunk 2077 achieved this sales figure much faster than the studio’s legendary game, The Witcher 3.
CD Projekt Red announced: Cyberpunk 2077 is now its main source of revenue
This significant milestone was detailed in the company’s latest earnings report. CD Projekt Red Chief Financial Officer Piotr Nielubowicz emphasized that the result is significantly better than The Witcher 3’s post-launch performance during the same period. This financial success also allows the company to expand its team for the sequel, Cyberpunk 2, currently being developed by teams in Warsaw and Boston.
Approximately half of the studio’s staff is currently focused on releasing The Witcher 4. However, plans call for over 300 developers to work on the science fiction-themed sequel by the end of 2027. This suggests a shift in focus for the studio, with full production ramping up by then.
While Cyberpunk 2077 has yet to break even with The Witcher 3’s record of 60 million total sales, the new record is commendable. As you may recall, the game’s launch was one of the most talked-about disasters in gaming history. It’s a rare comeback for a game that drew widespread criticism from players and was subsequently removed from the Sony store due to bugs, particularly on previous-generation consoles, to now be the company’s largest revenue stream.
This remarkable success stems from extensive patches and the Phantom Liberty expansion pack, released in 2023. The Switch 2 version, released in June, is also reported to have significantly contributed to sales. The five-year-old game appears to be running smoothly on Nintendo’s new hardware, giving millions of new players the chance to experience the atmosphere of Night City.
What are your thoughts on CD Projekt Red’s comeback and the future of the Cyberpunk universe? Do you think the sequel will learn from the mistakes of the first game?
